Urbino: Palace as City :: City as Palace

A visitor in 1471 declared that the Ducal Palace in Urbino was "not a house but a city". As we move through its expansive and light-filed hallways, loggias, and rooms, we do indeed feel as if we are moving the spaces of a beautifully ordered city. Large and small spaces are defined by a series of monumentally scaled doorways and windows, framed with jewel-like ornament. Later, as we walk through the streets, arcades, and squares of the city, we find the same doorways and windows, carefully placed to create urban spaces that seem like the rooms of a palace.
